Rockets From Syria Strike Northern Israel
At least two rockets fired from Syria landed in the Israeli Golan Heights on Tuesday, sparking widespread fears of renewed warfare with Lebanon’s Hezbollah terrorist militia, which is currently deployed in Syria to aid embattled dictator Bashar Assad.
There were no initial reports of damage or injuries resulting from the rocket fire from Syria, but Israel evacuated the Mt. Hermon ski resort and police closed roads to the northern half of the Golan as a precaution.
Israeli artillery returned fire, and the air force scrambled jets to the border region.
Local residents were ordered to remain in bomb shelters for the duration of the exchange, which appeared to have subsided by mid-afternoon.
The border region has been on high alert since last week, when an Israeli helicopter gunship fired two missiles at a convoy in the Syrian border town of Quneitra, killing a top Hezbollah field commander and a visiting Iranian general.
