{"id":775,"date":"2015-01-01T11:38:53","date_gmt":"2015-01-01T09:38:53","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/orenu.co.il\/en\/?p=775"},"modified":"2015-01-01T11:38:53","modified_gmt":"2015-01-01T09:38:53","slug":"israeli-media-takes-a-positive-look-at-messianic-jews","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/orenu.co.il\/en\/?p=775","title":{"rendered":"Israeli Media Takes a Positive Look at Messianic Jews"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-776\" src=\"http:\/\/orenu.co.il\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/01\/shai-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"shai\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" srcset=\"https:\/\/orenu.co.il\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/01\/shai-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/orenu.co.il\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/01\/shai.jpg 600w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/>Israel\u2019s leading media group, Keshet, has taken a keen interest in the nation\u2019s Messianic Jewish community after one of its flagship television shows, the popular singing competition Kochav Haba (\u201cThe Next Star\u201d), featured a Messianic Jewish contestant.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Keshet\u2019s online news and entertainment portal, Mako, published a weekend story asking readers to take a closer look at Israel\u2019s 15,000 Messianic Jews and to be more welcoming toward those who believe in Yeshua (Jesus).<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The article opened by highlighting some of the hostile comments made after openly-Messianic songstress Shai Sol scored a spot in Kochav Haba\u2019s second roundfollowing a mesmerizing audition performance.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The negative responses by some to Shai\u2019s appearance were, as the article noted, characteristic of the typical mainstream attitude toward Messianic Jews. But the fact that Mako ran such a sympathetic piece is further evidence that much of Israeli society is not only increasingly tolerant of Messianic Jews, but is also growing more curious about what they believe, and why.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">First, it should be noted that the Mako article used the name \u201cYeshua,\u201d rather than the derogatory \u201cYeshu,\u201d an acronym used by most Orthodox Jews meaning \u201cmay his name and memory be erased.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Shai was asked by Mako to explain in greater depth what it means to be a Messianic Jew, a subject she briefly touched on in her Kochav Haba pre-audition interview.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u201cIt is a stream of Judaism\u2026 We light Shabbat candles and worship God, read the Scriptures and learn the Bible,\u201d replied Shai, noting that the one major difference with mainstream Judaism is that \u201cwe believe in both the Tanakh and the New Testament.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Asked if that means Messianic Jews celebrate Christmas, Shai stated, \u201cAbsolutely not. We celebrate only the Jewish festivals. This is not Christianity, this is Messianic Judaism. After all, Yeshua was a Jew.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The conversation inevitably turned toward \u201cconversion\u201d and \u201cmissionary activity.\u201d The interviewer said that for her and many Jews, \u201cwhen I hear \u2018Messianic Jew\u2019 I immediately think of Jehovah\u2019s Witnesses.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Shai said there was no connection. \u201cThe title \u2018Messianic Jew\u2019 always brings up negative connotations of Christians, of a cult, of missionaries. We are not missionaries walking around trying to compel people.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The young singer explained that if someone like her interviewer was interested, \u201cI would tell you about Yeshua and show you some [supporting] scriptures. I would invite you to a meeting at a [Messianic] congregation.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Shai further clarified that Messianic faith is first and foremost \u201chumanitarian\u201d in nature, and that one cannot be <em>compelled<\/em> to accept Yeshua, who \u201cafter all [taught us] to spread love.
